Detailed Day Itinerary

Day 1: Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking

Your adventure starts at approximately 4:00 AM, when you depart from Kigali, Rwanda, and travel north through the beautiful Rwandan countryside towards the Cyanika border crossing.

After completing the border formalities, continue to Kisoro and proceed to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters. Here, you will receive a briefing about the trek before beginning your walk into the forest in search of the habituated mountain gorilla group.

Mgahinga’s forested slopes are part of the Virunga Mountains and provide an impressive setting for gorilla trekking. The trek can take several hours depending on the location and movement of the gorillas. Uganda Wildlife Authority states that gorilla tracking generally takes between 2 and 7 hours, including time spent searching for the gorilla family. Once you find them, visitors are allowed one hour of observation with the habituated family.

During your encounter, observe the gorillas as they feed, rest, and interact naturally in their forest environment. After the trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your driver-guide before continuing to Kisoro for lunch.

After lunch, begin the journey back towards Rwanda through the Cyanika border and continue to Kigali, marking the end of your one-day gorilla adventure.

Visitors should wear suitable hiking clothing and footwear and follow the instructions of the park guides and trackers throughout the experience. Gorilla trekking is also an important part of mountain-gorilla conservation and helps support the protection of the species and its habitat.
