Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Historical Sites
On this day, you start your one day Kigali city tour with an early breakfast to get ready for the day. A driver or tour agent from Albertine Tours will meet you at your hotel or pickup location to start off the trip. We shall have all the proposed sites shared by our driver guide and you will have the liberty to choose which you prefer to visit and which should be eliminated from the list. Engage with your driver guide concerning your interests while on this tour but remember all your requests must be realistic and within the city.
The Kigali city tour takes you to the major historical and cultural sites of Rwanda. You will visit Kandt House or museum of natural history where Dr. Richard Kandt the first German colonial resident of Rwanda resided. His residence at the base of Mount Jali and Mount Kigali in the heart of the city is now the Natural History Museum in honor of his work and is one of the stops on the tour. This can take about 1 hour in total depending on how you engage the museum guide about what you are learning about Kigali and Rwanda in general.
From here, you will drive to the Nyarutarama lake in which the locals have been swimming and fishing in the past years. Today, the area is very well-protected, with a wide variety of birds, such as the Swamp Flycatcher, Red-backed Shrike, Spot-flanked Barbet, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Yellow-billed Duck, Bat Hawk, African Hobby, Cisticolas, Red-chested Cuckoo, Little Bee-eater, Squacco Heron, Sunbirds, to name but a few.
We also have opportunities to visit the art and craft centers where you can even purchase souvenirs from to create memories as you travel back to your home country as you still watch the creative women involved in making these items. Lunch will be treated at a local restaurant where you will have a taste of Rwandan traditional food. You are free to choose a cosmopolitan restaurant for a more diverse menu.
Later in the afternoon, your guide will drive you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center. It is estimated that more than 250,000 victims are buried in this Memorial. Audio guided, you will be led in different areas of the Memorial. At the end of the tour, your driver will take you back to your hotel.
