Gorillas are primates whose DNA has been scientifically shown to resemble that of humans. They are known to live in groups of up to 20 members, with a male silverback leading the group. The juveniles and blackbacks are particularly fascinating to see; baby gorillas are raised by their mothers until they are two years old, and they enjoy making their nests on the ground. They solemnly feed from one point and readily split up once they have more than one silverback.

The main attraction at Volcanoes National Park is gorilla trekking, which entails hiking over the volcanic mountain environment. The treks start early in the morning, at 8:00 am East African time, and participants are split into groups of eight for each gorilla family.

One of the rules that must be observed when travelling with mountain gorillas is the 7-meter distance limit. Because the primates are easily contaminated, visitors with contagious diseases are not allowed to engage in the activity.
